IBUC 2006 Abstract

Navigation in CAI Systems
Mark Pierzchala ; Mathematica Policy Research, USA

This poster session describes all the elements of instrument design and organizational practices that come
together to allow interviewers or self respondents to successfully navigate in a CAI instrument. It reviews various
kinds of navigation as well as enabling CAI system attributes. It reviews three screen layout paradigms and
summarizes how each enhances or takes away from user navigational capability. Further it discusses ways in
which the survey organization can motivate users to navigate where it is appropriate, either to review previous
answers or to correct errors. The session is based in large part on experience with the Blaise system over 15 years
and its application to a wide variety of applications.
